Middle School

Middle school is the transition from elementary school to high school. At Our Savior, our upper grades are departmentalized with students moving among teachers and classrooms throughout the day. Some of the main goals are for students to grow spiritually, in academics, and in personal accountability and responsibility.

sixth grade

Sixth grade is the beginning of middle school at Our Savior. For the first time, students will switch classes and have many different teachers. Sixth grade is also the first year students have twice weekly Spanish classes. They will practice using their daily planner and following a schedule to change classes. In sixth grade students will be partnered with a Kindergarten student who will be their Chapel Buddy for the year. They will model positive worship behavior and leadership.

In sixth grade, students will have more challenging daily assignments and more long term projects. Examples include an American history explorer report and a literature museum diorama. In sixth grade students also have the opportunity to go on their first overnight field trip. Students travel to Blackrock Retreat Center in Pennsylvania for Science Camp where they explore God’s creation and engage in hands on learning projects.

Seventh Grade

Seventh grade is the transition year where students are familiar with the expectations of middle school, but are still growing in knowledge and responsibility. For the first time, students share a homeroom with another grade level. They practice interacting both socially and academically with students of a different age. Classes are increasingly difficult, with the introduction of new concepts in many areas, such as grammar and pre-algebra.

As a seventh grader, students have the opportunity to acolyte for the first time in our weekly chapel services. Some students also take on additional responsibilities as members of the Our Savior chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. At the end of the year the seventh grade also goes on an overnight service trip to Washington, DC. They learn about needs in our community and bringing the love of Jesus to others through a variety of activities.

Eighth Grade

Eighth graders are the leaders of our school body. They are the oldest students and set the example for those in the younger grades. Throughout the year, they take on leadership roles in school wide activities, such as guiding groups of students during Lutheran Schools Week and leading chapel services.

In eighth grade students are preparing for high school. This is the first time they will have lockers and they practice keeping track of assignments on their own with minimal teacher guidance. Students have the opportunity to earn high school credit through our Algebra, Spanish, and Geography classes. In the spring, students travel to New York City to explore some of the nation’s national landmarks. To end the year, the eighth grade class is celebrated with a graduation service and reception.
